Introducing video consultations and telemedicine to our clinic

Welcome to our new online consultation facility.
During the Corona Virus Pandemic and after, we encourage online allergy consultations at the Allergy Clinic. This is an endeavour to increase social distancing, and reduce spread of Corona Virus.
Allergy testing and assessments are uniquely suited to remote online consultations using social media such as Skype Face Time and Zoom video conferencing. This type of consultation opens up the ability to arrange diagnosis and testing in any Southern African geographic area and not just limited to one or two main centres. These consultations can be used to diagnose allergies in adults and children.
To ascertain if your particular symptoms and suspected allergy are likely to be resolved with an online consultation, we need to first make a preliminary assessment. We will then contact you to confirm whether an online consultation is entirely appropriate. During these online consultations, we can diagnose and treat many allergic conditions such as anaphylaxis, hay fever, rhinitis, eczema, contact dermatitis, bronchial asthma, hives / urticaria, food allergies, insect allergies and other adverse reactions and allergy screening.
If you are technologically “Phobic” and cannot cope with virtual consultations, we can arrange a telephone consultation for you.

Our simple virtual consultation process, as easy as 1,2,3…
1. Preliminary Allergy Assessment
Complete the Preliminary Allergy Assessment form here for an initial assessment (are we able to help?). If you do have an online consultation you will need access to a computer and the Internet and be signed up to use one of the virtual online tools such as Skype or Face Time (with Apple devices) and/or Zoom video conferencing facility with a microphone and audio facilities.
2. Book an Online Appointment
Book an online appointment and make payment R1000.00 introductory consultation fee via EFT or Payfast before your consultation takes place. Do not make any payment until we give the go-ahead and a date and scheduled time.
3. Online Consultation Process
During the Online consultation process, appropriate allergy testing will be discussed and explored during the one hour allocated time. You do not need to stop taking any regular medication or change your diet for the consultation. Try to collect any previous blood test results and take good-quality photographs of any rashes.
4. Allergy RAST IgE blood tests
This process will usually include suggested Allergy RAST IgE blood tests, or other testing directed specifically to your preliminary allergy diagnosis made during the preliminary consultation. These tests will be arranged by us at a private Pathologist close to your home to prevent any unnecessary travel and social interaction. The laboratories include Pathcare, Ampath and Lancet Laboratories. The cost of these tests will depend on your specific allergy and symptoms. Costs may vary from as little as R330 to as much as R3100 depending on the tests necessary. These costs will be discussed during the consultation and cleared with you before any financial burden is inflicted. Once the tests are mutually decided upon, we will email you the request form to take to the pathologist for the tests. In Cape Town we have a very comprehensive allergy test available at the UCT Lung Institute Allergology Unit. This is a more extensive inclusive test, the ALEX / MADX Allergy component IgE allergy test. This covers over 200 different environmental and food allergens and components and very good value at R2500.00. We can email a request form, for you to go to the unit to have the blood taken and your sample is then processed and we get a result back in about one week.
5. Full Management Plan
Once we have the test results available, then we can make a final diagnosis and offer treatment and a management plan. This will include a comprehensive personalised report sent by email and Full Management plan as well as a Pharmacy prescription if necessary emailed to your local chemist. If necessary a follow up online consultation will be arranged after one month. At this time further testing may or may not be necessary.
Data protection statement: At all times your personal information and data will be protected and not shared with any other individual or organisation without your permission in terms of Electronic Communications and Transactions Act No 25 of 2002.
